For this reason, and because of angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head.
1 Corinthians 11:10
I was reminded while praying over this study that I am not alone. The thing is, when you pray and then seek God in His Word, he reveals himself. The words come alive and it's as if He is truly speaking to you.
After the babies all went to bed, after my husband was asleep, I found myself in my prayer closet/laundry room. Nothing but a candle was lighting the room. I pray for so much wisdom. I pray for your marriage. I pray for your wisdom. I thank God for this opportunity and all His gifts. During this particular prayer I was thanking Him for giving me my husband. Something I encourage you to do is write out attitudes of your husband that you find godly. I pray over my husband's. When we met 27 years ago he was not a believer. He had lost his daddy at a young age and never quite resolved his grief. Now, as a man of faith, his faith is unwavering. He is steady and consistent in everything he does. His faith doesn't change or waiver. He believes every single thing happens for a reason. He is unchanging in how he loves his family. These are what make him a great man of God. All the other things that he is not, are of little importance with this type of perspective. This is why I encourage you to write down your husbands godly attributes. Begin to see your husband the way God intended him to be seen. See further, see where God wants to take him. I thanked God for being an unchanging God. This is a characteristic that I can depend on. After Amen, I sat down, opened my Bible. It opened straight to Malachi.
I the Lord do not change. Malachi 3:6
I could not have found that verse if I tried, not in a million tries of just opening my Bible would I have landed on that verse. The only one highlighted on that page. This is how the Holy Spirit let's you know He is helping you. This is how you know your Father is near. He speaks so blatantly through His Word when you seek Him. You are not alone and He wants you to know.
Our days are filled with so much. We are juggling many balls and wearing many hats. It's a struggle. we struggle to get the kids to school on time, to work on time and to get home on time. If you're at all like me, a schedule helps you feel in control. Our schedules fill up with projects, chores, meals, and bills to be paid. We struggle with returning emails, phone calls, texts; we may, just maybe have that same approach with our prayer time, our time with God. In the middle of our mess, it's difficult to make it all fit.
God wants to be near us. We don't always want God to fit in our schedule. The truth is, He doesn't expect us to do it alone and He certainly doesn't expect your willpower to be of any use in the matter. The truth is, His desire to be near us will override our desire to fit Him in. Are we sure we want that to be the answer He has for spending time with us? In all honesty, at the end of the day, with all the things that have gone wrong, all the things you did wrong, do you feel like He wants to spend time with you? In the middle of my mess, I don't feel worthy. Sometimes it's hard to open our lips and start speaking to Him. He's heard it all before, we mumble and ramble and we just figure He is tired of hearing it all. The truth is, He wants it all.
God wants to be with you. Jeremiah 31:33-34 declares that the Lord will "put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No long will a man teach his neighbor or a man his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' because they will all know me, from the least to the greatest...For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more." Praise Jesus, Amen.
He's taking the initiative. Our God, is just taking the wheel on our relationship with Him. One way or another, we are going to know He is God. He wants you to have a life that is abundant and free in Him. He has good things waiting for you and your husband. He wants you to have them so badly that He is going to write it on your hearts so you'll never be without Him. The pace of your day affects your relationship with God. How? What are you doing or not doing to seek a relationship with Him? He is with you otherwise and in spite of. Isn't it a beautiful thing that our Father wants to be with you. He is patiently waiting right with you. He seeks you out.
In the middle of your hurry. In the middle of your pushing. In the middle of your work. He isn't waiting on your schedule to open up for Him. He has already come to you. Will your respond to His desire for you? Acknowledge His presence. Recognize the truth already written by Him on your heart. Rest in His presence, experience His power, feel His great love, and forgiveness.
In order to get our marriage right, to get it on back on track, to keep it moving forward, we must work on our relationship with the Father. We are of no use to our husbands if we keep relying on our own abilities and strengths. We tire out and become discouraged by the weight of the world and the swirling of our mess. Only He can make it all beautiful.
I am married to my high school sweetheart. We've been pressing ahead together for over 24 years. We have 5 beautiful children; 3 by my own body and 2 through foster to adopt. I wrote this Bible study in 2009, years ago, for myself and shared it on my blog. It is very dear to my heart. It's been tweaked and edited many times and I'm proud to be bringing it back to you. Over the years I received countless emails from women who credited this study with changing their marriage for the better. Since removing it from my old blog I have received just as many emails asking when it would return. I hope you enjoy spending your time in God's Word with me.
